We employ an excellent comment spam killing doohickey. Occasionally, however comments which are possibly spam need to be manually checked. One technique spammers have been using recently is to just have a bundle of nonsensical random words in the message. After all, the point of the message in comments is the link, anyway, and in email is usually an embedded image. So, when I logged on today, I went through quickly looking at and deleting these.

Wading through them, I noticed that some of these random word lists almost seemed to contain esoteric knowledge, or some kind of veiled prophetic missive. They sound quite a lot like the Hybrids in BSG, in fact.

All of which leads me to my announcement - I hereby unveil the first Monthly Bizarre and Possibly Indicative of Sentience Comment Spam Award. (MBPISCSA). Now, this month was a tough one to call. I hadn’t cleared the spam for a while, so there were more than 20 entries to choose from. I eventually narrowed it down to 2 choices:

  • “tombless undertone plumbaginous heelpiece culilawan waterishness carone yusdrum”
  • “unsawn completedness bodyless bepraisement gasp annunciative tabla thebaic”

First thing to do is translate some of this nonsense. Now plumbaginous, of course, means ‘containing graphite’, but some of the other words are a bit on the obscure side. Culilawan is a type of aromatic bark, it seems, but I couldn’t find any definition for carone or yusdrum, unfortunately.  I assume thebaic is something like ‘of, or pertaining to Thebes’.

As much as I like the possible zombie-related flavour of the first one (I mean, come on! Tombless undertone, then we’ve got the heelpiece with granite in it, as the gravedigger walks away with their freshly acquired corpse, then later we have strange esoteric medicines making an appearance), the two nonsense words, and the wonderful religious imagery of ‘bodyless bepraisement’ in the 2nd comment make the 2nd a clear winner.
